Wellness My Way - Chloe Hodgson

from Chloes Pilates, on how she approaches everyday wellness...

Curious about what wellness means to us all, we’re on a mission to uncover how small and seismic wellness shifts can change our everyday lives - from attitudes to rituals, products to mindsets, treatments to movements, we’ll cover it all with some (not)guilty pleasures thrown in for good measure. Because wellness isn’t a fad, it’s a commitment to yourself, and to feeling healthier and happier.

This month we asked Chloe Hodgson, the founder of Chloes Pilates. Chloe offers in-person and online pilates classes from the Cotswolds, is a teacher at Bamford and also on the Deliciously Ella app, and offers support and events ranging from nutrition to sound healing and wild swimming.

"I have been passionate about fitness for a large part of my life, enjoying all kinds of sport from long-distance running to lacrosse and tennis," says Chloe. "Having previously thought Pilates a little static and limited, I was encouraged to try a class to build my core strength after injuring my back in an accident and miraculously I no longer have a problem. This convinced me of the benefits of Pilates and I have been a dedicated devotee of all types of Pilates ever since..."

Chloe has generously offered Seedling readers 10 weeks of free access to her membership programme (that's over 400 on-demand classes and x2 live classes with her online every week) this summer with access to Chloe’s Pilates Online Membership! Just add CODE: SEEDLING10 on the membership sign-up page (full details and t's and c's at the bottom of this article).

Here Chloe talks his through her approach to wellness - from the little daily rituals to the mindset that keeps her focused on self care..

The healing power of nature is profound. We are a part of nature, and I find being in it calming and invigorating. It gives me mental clarity and positivity – it heals me. I've never come back from a walk in nature feeling worse, especially when I focus on being mindful and present to the sights and sounds around me.
What does wellness mean to you?
Wellness to me means finding balance in everything I do—regular exercise but making time to rest and recover, eating a healthy balanced diet but with the occasional cocktail, working hard but being fully present in my downtime, and being social while also making time to be alone with my thoughts.

How do you approach wellness?
I approach wellness by making it an integral part of my family's life. I don’t feel that it is a hardship but a privilege to be healthy and well, and I feel fortunate to have this core belief and attitude towards wellness. I want to instil this mindset in my children as well. When people say life is too short to prioritise health and fitness, I say that our lives could be cut short if we don't. I aim to live not just a long life, but an active, fun, and healthy one. There is nothing worse than being ill, so if I can reduce the likelihood of my boys or myself getting sick, it's absolutely worth it.

Any tips on fitting a wellness ritual into your busy schedule?
My best advice is to make time for wellness and weave it into your busy schedule. Make it a priority, even more important than a meeting. For instance, set your alarm 30 minutes earlier to get some movement in first thing in the morning, go for a walk on your lunch break, or have a bath and do some breathwork instead of watching TV or scrolling in the evening. Preparing a packed lunch the night before can also save time and stress. Planning ahead, being consistent, and not allowing other things to get in the way are key. Consistency helps turn these habits into non-negotiables.

Of all the wellness areas - mind, body, spirit, which are you drawn to most?
All of them! It's hard to choose just one as they are interconnected. However, my daily priority is moving my body because it benefits my mind, body, and spirit.

How often do you exercise? What do you love doing (apart from / including pilates)?
Absolutely, every day! I try to mix it up, but I always take my dog for a walk – that's my favourite type of exercise! Most days, I do 20 minutes of Pilates and mobility exercises in the morning and 5 minutes of stretching before bed. I also make time for at least three strength sessions using heavy weights each week.

How does nature connect to wellness for you?
In every way! The healing power of nature is profound. We are a part of nature, and I find being in it calming and invigorating. It gives me mental clarity and positivity – it heals me. I've never come back from a walk in nature feeling worse, especially when I focus on being mindful and present to the sights and sounds around me. Prioritizing our connection with the natural world can pave the way for a healthier and happier life.

Facialist? And any recent treatments you’ve loved?
I hardly ever get facials – my belief is that eating well is my way of keeping my skin glowing! I love to get a good massage though! I always use the Lucie app for massages in my own home.

A book or author that you’re inspired by in wellness?
Eckhart Tolle's teachings and books have been so amazing, helping me to live in the present moment, work on finding an inner peace and open my eyes to more spiritual thinking.

What foods do you love to eat/prepare that make you feel your best?
I love having chicken bone broth on tap everyday.  I drink it straight and make lots of nourishing veggie stews, soups and curries with it!

Any tips for nutritional snacking?
I LOVE any type of fruit and great and easy thing to snack on.  I could snack all day if I could but my gut doesn’t like it so I try and stick to 3 meals a day if I can.

What daily beauty wellness products do you swear by?
I try my best to use products that are as natural and toxic free as possible.  I love Inika make up, moisturisers and SPF.  My latest love is Star Seed Natural Forest cream – it's magic (use CHLOE20 for 20% off)!

Do you take any regular supplements?
I love Ancient & Brave Electrolytes & collagen (use CHLOESPILATES for 20% off), I’ve recently been using Sisterley which are specifically designed for women and our bodies needs, giving us the right formulas and support (use Chloe20 for 20% off).  I love Wild Nutrition Magnesium (use WILDCHLOE for 15% off) and Wilder’s amazing tinctures (use CHLOE30 for 30% off)

What’s your typical morning ritual (on a good wellness morning)?
A structured morning routine sets me up for the day ahead! It helps increase my productivity & helps clear my head. I normally wake up when the sun rises, scrape my tongue, drink a big glass of warm water with electrolytes, do some posture exercises and yoga and have a cold shower.  When I have more time at the weekends I try and get outside first thing, ground my bare feet on the grass or take the dog for a walk.

Eckhart Tolle's teachings and books have been so amazing, helping me to live in the present moment, work on finding an inner peace and open my eyes to more spiritual thinking.

Evening ritual (on a good wellness day)?
A calming evening routine is also very important as it helps to improve my sleep hugely and helps my body unwind. I avoid screens an hour before bed, I do some gentle stretching, have a warm bath with Epsom salts, practice some breathwork, or read a book in bed!

Fave workout gear…
I am LOVING Bamboo clothing – sustainable and made from bamboo (use chloespilates15 for 15% off)! I also love a Lululemon legging! And I wear Vivobarefoot shoes all day everyday (use CHLOEH10 for 10% off!)

Dream travel + wellness escape?
I love Menorca so much. we are lucky to have a family house there so we get to go every summer and its heaven!
