Wellness My Way - Laura Fantacci

Co-Founder & Chief Creative Officer of W. ICONS on how she approaches wellness...

Curious about what wellness means to us all, we’re on a mission to uncover how small and seismic wellness shifts can change our everyday lives - from attitudes to rituals, products to mindsets, treatments to movements, we’ll cover it all with some (not)guilty pleasures thrown in for good measure. Because wellness isn’t a fad, it’s a commitment to yourself, and to feeling healthier and happier.

This month we asked one of the most stylish women we know - Laura Fantacci - a former fashion editor of glossy magazines, and the Co-Founder & Chief Creative Office of the digital style platform, Wardrobe ICONS. At almost 10 years old, W. ICONS continues to be the authority on high/low fashion, beauty & lifestyle, showing us what 'never goes out of fashion.'

Italian-raised Laura has called London (a second) home for decades with her husband and is a devoted mother of two girls. We want to know how she always manages to look stylish and fresh while navigating the juggle. Read on for Laura's top tips...

During lockdown, I really grew mesmerised by the nature around me since we had to stay indoors for so much of it.  It reminded me of my childhood, growing up in the countryside of Italy.  Even looking at the colour green is such a breath of fresh air and soothes me.  Living in such an urban environment now, I notice the beauty of nature even more...
What does wellness mean to you?
To me, wellness goes hand in hand with both the mental and physical perspectives.  Carving out time to look after myself so I can be present with everyone who needs me, whether that’s my family, children, or work.  I tend to approach it by doing yoga so I can check in with myself and really commit to being present.

Any tips on fitting a wellness ritual into your busy schedule?
Committing.  Don’t make excuses to skip it.  It’s easy to slip out of a habit, so it’s important to commit to it the same way you would commit to other things.  The hardest part is showing up, but once you have a ‘this is worth it’ moment, hang on to that.  For me, sticking to my morning routine gives me the grounding I need that allows me to be that person for everyone.

Of all the wellness areas - mind, body, spirit, which are you drawn to most?
Mind - because of the reason above.  For me, if I’m able to have clarity and space in my mind, the rest follows.

Do you regularly exercise? What do you love doing for exercise?
Outside of yoga, I don’t exercise regularly; I’m not good at anything too strenuous.  However, about a year ago, I started playing tennis again.  I used to play it as a young girl, and I’m so happy to have re-discovered it.  Unfortunately, I have to take a pause from playing it in the winter as I prefer playing outside, and it’s just too cold here in the UK.

How does nature connect to wellness for you?
Immensely.  I read a quote from David Attenborough, “You'll never sit more than 10 minutes in nature without something amazing happening.”  During lockdown, I really grew mesmerised by the nature around me since we had to stay indoors for so much of it.  It reminded me of my childhood, growing up in the countryside of Italy.  Even looking at the colour green is such a breath of fresh air and soothes me.  Living in such an urban environment now, I notice the beauty of nature even more.

Do you meditate? Or what’s your version of ‘you time’ to get away from the noise and to-do lists…?
I sometimes meditate when it’s offered in my yoga class.  However, I find it hard to let my thoughts go.  I like the challenge of it, but so far I don’t think I’m very successful at it.

A treatment/ritual/mindset that has changed your life?
In regards to a treatment, I really gravitate towards products with essential oils.  A bath or shower with great oils can have incredibly uplifting effects for me and make me view them as self-care.  However, a nightly ritual I’ve recently implemented is switching my phone off at night and charging it in another room.  It’s no longer the first thing I look at when I wake up, and it’s given me a healthier relationship with my phone.

Facialist? And any recent treatments you’ve loved?
I recently had the pleasure of trying Estelle Manor’s new spa, Eynsham Baths.  I love being in the water, and the spa has a number of pools of different temperatures which I found really invigorating.  Their cafe was also amazing with lots of delicious food and juices.

A book or author that you’re inspired by in wellness?
From a mind perspective, Brene Brown’s book “Dare to Lead,” has really helped me unlock some mechanisms for a healthier mindset.  I also like Adrienne Mishler’s [yoga] classes, she’s a great guide.

A podcast to share on wellness?
With a pinch of salt, Goop is an interesting source of wellness.

What foods do you love to eat/prepare that make you feel your best?
Skye McAlpine and Ella Mills - who are not only frequent collaborators with W. ICONS - are two of my favourite chefs, and I love cooking from their books.  I usually go for a vegetable dish, as there isn’t a vegetable on the planet that I don’t love.   I eat them every day and with every meal - even breakfast!  I thank my Italian upbringing.  In terms of specific meals, typical Italian summer dishes are my favourite, like grilled fish with a delicious side.  Anything that reminds me of summer makes me happy.  Honestly, I eat a bit of everything except gluten, which I’m allergic to. I enjoy food, and I don’t spare anything; it makes me feel good.

Any tips for nutritional snacking?!
To be honest, I’m not a big snacker.  Maybe something nut related.  I recently tried the Deliciously Ella Almond Ball and loved it.

What daily beauty wellness products do you swear by?
I’m very lucky that I get to try lots of different beauty and wellness products as part of my job, but I definitely have some favourite brands that I’ll always go back to.  We had Miranda Kerr as one of our cover stars last April, and that’s when I really fell in love with her skincare brand Kora Organics.  The Turmeric Glow Foaming Cleanser is my go-to product.  Seed to Skin Tuscany not only has some of my favourite products, but they also have an amazing spa that I try to visit when I’m back in Italy.

Do you take any regular supplements?
I’m quite big on a routine; I take vitamin D, B12, and C, all from the brand Garden of Life.  The vitamins are from foods rather than lab-made which I prefer.  I also take Symprove, every day because I’m celiac which helps me stay on top of my gut health.  While I take a break from vitamin D during the summer, the rest of the year I add chia seeds and flax seed powder to a lot of my meals to try and make up for it.

What’s your typical morning ritual (on a good wellness morning)?
Wake up, clean my tongue with a copper tongue scraper. It’s always the first thing I do every morning once I wake up.  [My friend] Jasmine Henly encouraged me to do it, and I’ve noticed such a difference.
Vitamins on an empty stomach.
My morning skincare routine, which always consists an SPF and a Vitamin C serum.
Get my kids ready for school
Yoga for 20/25 minutes with some incense burning.

I’m aware of the impact that fashion has on the planet and society, but I still love it.  I love the thrill that I get when I get something new or unwrap a box.  Through W. ICONS, I’ve tried to build something that’s more mindful in usage, consumption, and circularity...

Evening ritual (on a good wellness day)?
Bath or shower.  I like to make it into a spa and really indulge that moment.   I’ll light a candle, use bath oils, and do a face or hair masque if I have time. Afterwards, I’ll change into a cosy bathrobe get into bed and look at this painting in my bedroom, which is the view of the sea in Australia.  My husband bought it for me and now it hangs in front of our bed.  Admiring this painting every night lets my mind wander.
Finally, I’ll read until I can feel my eyes drifting closed.  Biographies, self-help, and business-oriented books are my favourite.

A weekly ritual you have made or intend to make that is just for you….?
Stick to not working on a Friday.  Friday is my sanity day - it’s my day to fit in things that I don’t normally have time to do the rest of the week.  It’s my to-do list that isn’t just about my work or kids, whether it’s meeting with friends or playing tennis.  I really hang onto it.

Fave workout gear…
It depends on what I’m doing, but usually I’ll go for something quite fitted at the top, and something more roomy and comfortable at the bottom; I’d rather wear a harem pant than leggings most of the time.  When I’m playing tennis, though, I have an outfit from Varley that I love.

Dream travel + wellness escape?
It’s so hard to pick somewhere; we recently partnered with Mr & Mrs Smith for our first ever travel issue.  It made me realise just how many beautiful places there are in the world to explore.  In the near future, I’m going to South Africa on a Safari with my family.  It’s something we’ve always wanted to do, and now I think my kids are old enough to truly appreciate the experience.  But my true dream trip would be if Adriene Mishler ever hosted a yoga retreat; wherever it is in the world, I’d hop on a plane to be there.

Quote or Mantra?
“Never take no as an answer.”  My grandfather used to say it.  I love trying to find a way to make something happen. I don’t like to say no, especially to my kids if I don’t have to.  So when someone or something says no to me, I want to know: no now? no never?  It really makes me appreciate people who have initiative, are open-minded, and are flexible thinkers.

Your guilty pleasure?
It could be fashion, which is why I’ve tried to come up with a way to consume it in a way that’s less guilty.  I’m aware of the impact that fashion has on the planet and society, but I still love it.  I love the thrill that I get when I get something new or unwrap a box.  Through W. ICONS, I’ve tried to build something that’s more mindful in usage, consumption, and circularity.
